NUT Student Teachers (15 votes)

(Created by : carlymau )

We feel that the Governments have been only selectively funding climate change initiatives in schools, restricting children's opportunities to learn more and get involved. We feel that, for example, the UK Government's Academies initiative has been implemented without thought for the environment, and many of the new buildings are not ecologically sound, so there is going to be a limit on what teachers can do to promote the climate change message. We also feel that the Government has used fear to limit the amount of information we can impart to children on the climate crisis.

However, we feel that teachers here in the UK and across the world can be influencing the lifestyle choices of the next generation, regardless of whether the Government chooses to fund the projects or not.

This can be through simple projects, such as organising gardening clubs in schools and appointing an Energy monitor in each year. Also we feel that teachers should be encouraged more to take public transport or adopt the Bikes To Work scheme, not only to reduce their own carbon footprint but also to set good examples for younger people.
